before i get into this, here's a disclaimer: i am psychotic. i experience frequent delusions, including delusions of being a fictional character. this is not coming from a place of judgement. this is just me, a psychotic person who has been in psychotic communities for 5+ years, having serious concerns about recent trends.
i don't think you're a bad person for using 'delusional attachment' and i understand the reasons why people use the term; i'm just trying to explain why i dislike it.
with that out of the way, here's my explanation. it's broken into parts to be easier to process.
1. 'delusional attachment' is not a clinical term.
the clinical term to refer to delusions of being a fictional character is 'delusions of grandeur'. delusional attachment is not, and never has been, a clinical term. it was a term coined by someone on the internet only last year that has now spread. as far as i'm aware, this is the carrd made by the person who coined the term (warning for auto-play).
treating it like a medical term is just misinformation. if you want to use it to describe your own experiences, then fine, but you need to make it clear that this is a term you're using for yourself and isn't in any way a medical term.
2. 'attachment' in psychology has an entirely different meaning.
'attachment' in psychology refers to 'attachment theory'. attachment theory describes the bond between a baby and their mother, and the way that those bonds impact on us in later life. attachment theory is very important when discussing childhood trauma.
one attachment type is called 'disorganised attachment'. this is often shortened to 'da'. disorganised attachment is the most severe attachment type a person can have.
3. psychosis is more than just delusions, and delusions are about more than just fiction.
i see so many posts describing 'delusional attachment', but i see nothing about other forms of delusions or other symptoms of psychosis. as a psychotic person, i find this very frustrating and wish the same energy was put into other aspects of these disorders.
psychosis includes hallucinations, disorganised thinking & speech, catatonia, and other symptoms depending on what disorder your psychosis is connected to. delusions are also about a wide range of different topics, not restricted to just being about fandom.
i'd love it if people could spread accurate information as psychotic disorders are heavily demonised and we need people helping us to combat that.
4. feeding delusions is unhealthy.
while reality checking isn't always helpful for delusional people, there's a difference between avoiding reality checking and feeding someone's delusions. i'm sorry if it's hard to hear, but feeding your delusions will make them more complex and harder to challenge. the community around 'delusional attachments' seems to be based around feeding people's delusions.
5. there is a difference between believing you are a fictional character for escapism or to stablise your sense of identity and having delusions.
i'm sure that many people with 'delusional attachments' are genuinely delusional, however, i'm not sure that all of them are. delusions are distressing beliefs that don't align with reality.
believing you're a certain character doesn't inherently mean you're delusional; even if you think it's a product of your mental health, it could be magical thinking, a form of escapism or a way of stabilising your identity. none of these are any less valid than the other but they are different and require different responses.
6. the lack of research people are putting into this.
i strongly believe in the validity of self-diagnoses, however, you must do research before self-diagnosing. people using a non-clinical term and engaging in a community that treats delusions in a way that is known to make them worse just gives the impression that they haven't researched the disorder they think they have in the slightest.
below i've included some basics to start you off with research. please at least skim them and do your own independent research so you can be sure that you understand what you're talking about!
7. delusions of being a fictional character being treated differently to other types of delusion.
by giving delusions of being fictional characters a special name online, it's creating a weird separation between those delusions and other delusions - especially when it's given a name that doesn't fit in with the naming conventions of delusions (because it's been taken from the naming convention of attachment styles). it gives the impression that these delusions are something Different when they're really... not.
delusions of being fictional characters should not be treated any differently to any other kind of delusion.
personally, if you still genuinely believe that your delusions are what's causing you to believe you're a fictional character, i think it's better to just say 'i have a delusion of being [x]' or 'i have delusions of grandeur involving [y]'. if you feel the need to have a more specific term, then please just coin a new one, do research to make sure the name is something that makes sense, and be clear that it isn't a medical term.
if you want resources to read about psychosis, here are some genuine, trustworthy resources that i hope can help you.
also here are some books that you can download about psychosis. i haven't read all of these so i can't verify them but they're undoubtedly more reliable than what you'll read on twitter.
